Marjorie Ann Baron, nèe Vaughn, beloved wife of George Baron and teacher of generations of Marion Catholic High School students, passed on amid loving family on July 4, 2013. She leaves behind five children: Anne, Susan, Stephen, Thomas, and Eve, their spouses, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Born and raised on a farm in Carey, Ohio, Marjorie worked her way through college at Ohio State University, earning a teaching certificate which she put to use teaching young women at Moxahela High School in southern Ohio.
She married George Bernard Baron on June 24, 1950, and they settled in Marion, Ohio to start their family. As soon as the children were all in school, she began her long career teaching English, Journalism, and French language at Marion Catholic High School, with a two-year interim at Upper Sandusky High School. With most of the children grown or off to college, Marjorie earned a Master’s degree in French education at age 50. Thereafter she continued teaching at Marion Catholic, and for some time also taught at the Marion branch of Ohio State University.
Her numerous accomplishments during her teaching career included editorship of the Emerald, the school newspaper, coordination of the National Honor Society for Marion Catholic High School, and management of the school study abroad program. Marjorie took groups of students to France a total of ten times over the years. Marjorie continued to teach at Marion Catholic until the age of 84, and even after “retirement” continued to substitute teach.
Up to the time of her diagnosis with bone marrow cancer in early 2013, Marjorie was vibrant, energetic, community-minded, and active in her church, volunteer work, and in caring for her husband. Her husband, her family, her friends, and the entire community have lost a loving, giving, accomplished, respected and altogether remarkable woman. She is dearly missed but lives on in the hearts and minds of all who loved her.
