Virgil L. Guiher, 81, of Mt. Gilead

Virgil L. GuiherA loved and loving husband, father, and grandfather Virgil L. Guiher of Mt. Gilead  went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Virgil was 81 years of age. He was a devoted Christian and a member of the Canaan United Methodist Church.
Virgil was born to Glenn and Stella Guiher on December 14, 1931. He was the youngest of 4 boys.

He graduated from Cardington High School in 1950. Following high school he attended The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio, and graduated in 1954.  Following graduation Virgil continued his education at The Ohio State University College of Law and graduated in 1956. Virgil has been a practicing lawyer for 57 years in the state of Ohio.

Virgil enlisted in the United States Navy in 1957 where he served our country as the Legal Officer (JAG) aboard the USS Yorktown CV-10 and he attained the rank of Lieutenant Sr. grade. He was stationed out of Long Beach, CA. and spent time in multiple ports throughout the United States.  The majority of his time was spent touring the Far East and Pacific regions- over the years we have heard numerous stories and adventures from these foreign travels- to include once inadvertently “strolling” in to Red China. Virgil had an opportunity to tour the USS Yorktown a few years ago and re connect with memories and fellow ship mates while he served. The USS Yorktown is dry docked in Charleston, SC. He served actively until 1961 and inactively through 1964.

Virgil began his private law practice in Mt. Gilead, Ohio in 1961.  He served as Morrow County Court Judge from 1970-1976. Virgil served as Prosecuting Attorney for Morrow County from 1981-1985. He was a man that never stopped learning, never stopped going to the law library and in fact was still a practicing attorney in the state of Ohio upon his death.

Virgil’s passions included serving and loving his wife Evelyn and his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved anything to do with water and anything to do with a mental challenge.

In 1964 Virgil married Evelyn Irene Long at the Edison United Methodist Church and together raised four children and recently celebrated their 49th anniversary.

Virgil will be dearly missed and survived by his wife, Evelyn Guiher; his four children: Howard (Sandi) Guiher, Rebecca Guiher (Frederick) Horner, John Guiher, and Amy Guiher (Bruce) Randolph; 17 grand children; 6 great grandchildren; and a multitude of extended family and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father: Glenn and Stella Guiher; and 3 brothers: George, Harold and Dale.

The Guiher Family will meet family and friends at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.  Calling hours are 1-3 p.m. and again from 5-7 p.m. Services will be held to celebrate Virgil’s life at the Edison United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Matt Skelton and Pastor Ron Davis officiating.  A graveside service with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will be held Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m. at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Brush Ridge.

There will also be a tribute from the Morrow County Bar Association to honor Virgil’s service to the County at the Morrow County Courthouse, Court of Common Pleas, on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 4:00 p.m.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers any memorial contributions be made to the Canaan United Methodist Church (2006 County Rd. 59, Edison, Ohio 43320).
