Helen Marie Scowden, age 74, of Montague, Mi., a former Marion, Oh. resident, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at 3:10 a.m. in the Harbour House, Muskegon, Mi.
She was born on August 12, 1939 in Soudan, Mn. to the late Eino and Ilmi (Riikola) Kehus.
Helen married Howard D. Scowden in Ely, Mn. on November 28, 1959 and he preceded her in death on February 28, 1959.
She was an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marion. While living in Marion, Helen worked as a secretary for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and as a legal secretary for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, retiring in 2002. She volunteered for the Marion City School’s reading program, the Marion Palace Theatre, and the Ely-Bloomensen Hospital Nursing Home.
Helen enjoyed spending summers relaxing and fishing at her cabin on White Iron Lake in Ely, Mn.
She is survived by 3 sons; Robert (Jody) Scowden of Ely, Mn., John (Cathy) Scowden of Gahanna, Oh., & Michael (Sandra) Scowden of Teaneck, N.J., a daughter; Mary (Jeff) Dandron of Montague, Mi., a sister; Harriet (Frank) McNaughton, 12 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by a brother; John Kehus.
Friends may call at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home on Sunday, December 29, 2013, from 2-5 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow in the Marion Cemetery. Pastor Craig Lewis will be officiating.
