Jack H. Owens, 83, of Marion

Well known golfer Jack H. Owens age 83 passed away Saturday Morning March 22, 2014 at home.

Jack was born October 5, 1930 to the late Gayle and Elsie (Richardson) Owens in Marion. He graduated from Marion Harding in 1948. Jack served in the United States Air Force 1951-1953, serving in Korea 1951-1952 and honorably discharged.

On September 21, 1952 he married the former Beulah Ann Webb who survives in Marion.

Jack was a golfer who made a living working on the railroad for 42 years. He retired as a locomotive engineer. He started out with the Erie RR which later became part of Conrail. Jack enjoyed golf for over 50 years. After retiring from Conrail he played golf almost every day. He won many golf tournaments. The high light of his golfing years was playing with his son in the United States Father and Son Invitational Golf Tournament in Pinehurst at the Country Club of North Carolina. He won multiple Hickory Grove Club Championships, multiple Marion County Open Championships and a Heart of Ohio Championship. He was instrumental in starting and participating in the annual Harding High School Golf Teams Spring trips in 1970.

He was a member of the Marion Elks #32, V.F.W. Stephen J. Chaney Post #7201, American Legion Bird McGinnis Post #162. A life member of the Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers. Former member of Hickory Grove Country Club, Marion Country Club, Whetstone Country Club. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church where he ushered for a few years.

Besides his wife Beulah, he is survived by his son, James (Sharon) and children, Jordan (Jennifer), Curtis and Courtney, daughters Mary Weichel and children, Deryk, Nicholas and Monet Figueroa, Lyndsay Somerlot and children Destinee and Brayden. Great grandchildren, Isiah and Amias.

He was preceded in death besides his late parents, a brother, Robert Eugene Owens, sister, Patricia Louise Owens and a grandson, James Andrew Owens.

At the request of Jack there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Emanuel Lutheran Church Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10 AM with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. The Boyd-Born Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family.
