Norma L. Mauk, 86, of Marion

Norma L. MaukNorma L. Mauk, age 86, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, March 3, 2014, at the Marion General Hospital surrounded by her loving family following an extended illness.

On December 4, 1927, Norma was born in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of the late Earl Birchem and Florence (Allen) Birchem Davis.  The late Lowell Davis was her stepfather for 52 years.  Norma graduated from Marion Harding High School with the class of 1945.

While still in high school, Norma met her future husband from Kenton, OH, while he was home on a stint from the U.S. Navy during WW II.  He happened to drive to Marion to eat at the old Fish Sandwich Shop uptown where Norma’s mother worked.  Norma would go there after school to wait on her mother to finish up.  Being extremely busy that day, Florence told Norma to help out by taking the food to this tall, handsome, tan man.  Shyly, she did so.  Consequently, Norma and this gentleman exchanged letters until the war ended.  On June 23, 1946, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Marion, Norma married this man…the late Dr. Harry E. Mauk.  They were married 64 beautiful years, with four children, before Dr. Harry passed away July 24, 2010.

During their early marriage, Norma worked at the Pure Oil Company as a secretary for 5 years.  When her children were born, Norma stayed home to rear them, while also keeping the books for the Mauk Chiropractic office.  Norma loved doing office work and was excellent in record-keeping.  Everyone would say this was her “hobby”, next to entertaining her grandchildren.  Norma always aspired to look her best every day; she loved shopping, entertaining and planning parties, and loved working on her class reunions.  Norma had a keen eye for details in every manner…and she truly enjoyed decorating her home at Christmas.

Norma spent time vacationing with her children and loved having her grandchildren spend the night with her, where she would play board games; they would stay up a good part of the night watching 4-5 movies she rented, taking breaks to eat popcorn or her favorite – ice cream sundaes.  All the grandkids loved to sleep over at her house – she was fun, funny and made them laugh a lot.

Norma was loved by anyone who knew her – from 2-92, and beyond.  She had a warm, beautiful heart and smile and everyone wanted to be around her.  We will dearly miss our mother and grandmother, the matriarch of our family, who always gave so willingly of her time – she made all of us feel important and loved.

She will be dearly missed by one daughter, Sandy (Jerry) Yager of Marion; three sons: Dr. Gary (Colleen) Mauk, Dr. David (Kim) Mauk, and Tim (Vickie) Mauk, all of Marion; as well as 14 grandchildren: Joe, Jim (Iantha), Jeremy, and Justin (Tara) Yager; Heather Muhlenthaler; Amber (Todd) Korn; Dustin (Nicole) Mauk; Whitney, Tiffany and Tyler Mauk; Bailee, Jaden and Parker Mauk; Brittany Mullins; and 10 great-grandchildren: Alysia, Chelsea, and Jaxson Yager; Casey and Cara Muhlenthaler; Logan and Ryder Korn; Jace Worbel; and Addison and Riley Mullins.  She also leaves behind her beloved dog of 16 years, Romeo.

Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7th, at the Crosswood United Methodist Church, 1551 Richland Rd, Marion.  Services celebrating her life will also be held there on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Joe Ziraldo officiating.  Burial will follow in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Crosswood United Methodist Church (address above), and the Marion Area Humane Society, 2664 Richland Rd., Marion, OH 43302.
