William A. “Bill” Hurtt, 74, of Marion

William A. “Bill” HurttWilliam A. “Bill” Hurtt, age 74, of Marion, passed away on March 7, 2014, in his home surrounded by the family he loved and cherished.

Bill was born on May 31, 1939 in Royal Oak, Michigan, the son of Reuben A. and Mary (Wise) Hurtt. He attended the Marengo High School and graduated in the class of 1957. He then attended the MATA College in Columbus and also Marion Technical College in Marion.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Taipei, Taiwan serving as a Chinese interpreter.

After his time in the service, Bill worked at Tecumseh, Ohio Wesleyan as a Programmer analyst, the Delaware JVS where he taught computer lit classes and then he went to Whirlpool where he was retired from.

On December 18, 1965, Bill was united in marriage to Joyce A. Miller. Together they have shared nearly 50 years of marriage.

Bill was a man of many talents and abilities. He built his own sailboat, he was an artist, he made furniture for his family and he was a friend and mentor to countless children providing them a firm foundation of values and responsibility. Bill loved sports of any kind; he was partial to the Elgin High School and the Ohio State University. Bill gave of his time to the Elgin Athletic Boosters, family game nights and teaching his grandkids and great grandkids how to play baseball, softball and soccer. He delighted in being there to watch the accomplishments of the grandkids on and off the field of sports. He truly valued family above all else.

Bill had a strong faith that sustained and comforted him in life and he is now at peace and fully restored with his Heavenly Father. He and Joyce are members of the Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish and honor Bill’s memory include his devoted wife Joyce A. Hurtt; beloved children: Tamara (Paul) Short of West Mansfield, Tara (Don) Bateman of Marion and Todd (Kristel) Hurtt of Marion; loving grandchildren: Joshua, Tiffany, Billy, Jordan, Garrett, Camryn, Maddie and Dalani; great grandsons: Braeden, Holden and Kellen; brothers: Richard (Barbara) Hurtt of Tucson, AZ, James (Shirley) Hurtt of Monticello, KY; sister Christine Baugher of Birmingham, MI; several nieces, nephews and brother and sisters in law.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother Robert Hurtt.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Mt. Vernon Avenue Church of Christ, 947 Mt. Vernon Ave. from 2PM to 5PM; Memorial services will immediately follow at 5PM with Dr. Jason Robson officiating.

If so desired, donations may be made the Marion General Hospital Hospice, Elgin Athletic Boosters or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
