David L. Hoback, 72, of Marion

David L. HobackDavid L. Hoback, age 72, of Marion passed away July 17, 2014 at the Heartland of Marion Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy and courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. During his illness, Dave was a fixture at The James where his consummate trust in his health care team headed by Craig Hofmeister, MD and Megan Sell, CNP inspired a commitment to search for the ultimate cure.

He was born April 9, 1942 in Lodi, OH. He was a 1960 graduate of Athens High School and a 1966 business administration graduate from Ohio University. He spent the majority of his professional career with General Telephone of Ohio in both New Philadelphia and Marion. After retirement from GTE, he taught at the Tri-Rivers Adult Education Center and worked at Kale Marketing in Richwood.

He is survived by his loving life partner and wife of 46 years Carla Miller Hoback; son Rick Hoback (Lisa) of Waldo and daughter Lori Hoback Condon (Chuck) of Adrian, Michigan and grandchildren CJ, Caitlynn, Easton and Janelle; sisters Phyllis Combs of Richmond, Kentucky, and Marjorie Poston of Groveport; brother Gary Hoback (Cindy) of Ararat, Virginia; sister-in-law Grace Miller Essex (Rick) of Athens; brother-in-law Alan Miller (Murley) of Columbus and numerous supportive nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents Dwight E. Hoback and Marie Vanaman Johnson.

A US Army Veteran, Dave served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Military Intelligence Detachment where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star.

Besides his family, Dave’s passion included model railroading, travel by the longest and slowest route, annual family North Carolina beach visits, photography and computers. He was a voracious reader with a special interest in the Civil War.

Visitation will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 135 W. Main St., Waldo from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 21; Memorial service will be at St. Paul at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, 2014.v Pastor Sara Schaaf officiating.
