Janet Alice “Jan” Campbell, age 69, of Marion, died peacefully early Sunday morning, October 26, 2014, at her home with her loving family by her side following a four year battle with cancer.
On April 3, 1945, Jan was born in Sandusky, Ohio, the second of three children of the late Maurice and Alice (Woodard) Link. She graduated from Parma Sr. High School in the class of 1963. She was very popular in high school being voted most popular, Miss Parma Senior High, a cheer leader and on the homecoming court. After high school she moved to Michigan working for TWA as a ticket agent.
In the fall of 1980, Jan moved to Marion with her two young children to work at Fairfield Engineering in Marion as an assistant to the engineering department and project managers. Shortly thereafter, she met a fellow employee who would quickly become the love of her life, Winston Campbell. They were married on June 30, 1984, at Salem United Church of Christ. They truly made the most of their 30 years together.
After Fairfield Engineering, Jan worked at Modern Woodmen, Bank One assisting the vice president of commercial loans and Ohio State University at Marion as an assistant to the advising department.
Very faithful, Jan enjoyed attending the Crosswood United Methodist Church, and formerly she was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ.
Sharing a love for camping and traveling, Jan and Winston visited most of the United States in a tent or their pop-up camper, always looking for another museum, antique store or national park to tour and family to visit. She enjoyed riding on the back of their motorcycle, touring back roads and small towns looking for the perfect ice cream cone. Jan also especially loved walking the beach in North Carolina. They visited Williamsburg and other historical sites several times, and just a few weeks ago they fulfilled a lifelong dream of theirs to visit Alaska.
Having a deep appreciation for history, Jan and Winston were members of a colonial era historical reenactment group all their married life. Also, Winston lost Jan for days at a time whenever she would research her roots on Ancestry.com. She traced her family as far back as 1620. She also especially loved rug hooking, designing her own patterns and sewing, making most of the history clothing they wore reenacting. Baking was another love with her pies being famous with her family and friends.
She will forever be missed for her compassion and caring for everyone around her even when she was the one who needed the care, always with a patient, kind ear and kind word.
She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, Winston Campbell of Marion; two adored children: William “Bill” (Mona) Strasser of North Ft. Myers, FL, and Heidi (Rob) Gossett of Lewis Center; four precious grandchildren: Brandi and Shylee Strasser, and Austin and Aaric Gossett; a sister, Judith (Jim) Ireland of Chester, MD; a brother, Richard (Kim) Link of Peoria, AZ; a niece, Jill Ireland; a great niece and nephew: Sammy and Lily Gomez; three special cousins: Mike, Jeff, and Tim Hughes; and many, many dear friends.
Her family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Memorial services honoring her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Nov.1, 2014 at the Crosswood United Methodist Church, 1551 Richland Rd., Marion, with Rev. Joe Ziraldo officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Galion.
