Robert G. “Bob” Hensel, age 83, formerly of Marion, died Monday morning, October 27, 2014 at Parkside Village Senior Living Community in Westerville.
On January 16, 1931, Bob was born in Dunkirk, Ohio, the son of the late A. Dean and Doris E. (Price) Hensel. He graduated from Dunkirk High School and then received an Associate’s in Accounting from Tiffin University.
A U.S. Army Veteran, Bob proudly served his country in Korea. Shortly after returning from Korea, he was set up on a blind date with Phyliss A. Rish. They went on a double date to the drive in theatre in a convertible, and soon became inseparable. Bob and Phyliss were married in Kenton on April 23, 1955 and shared over 55 wonderful years together as husband and wife before she preceded him in death in 2010.
Bob was a long time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Marion. He served as a deacon and treasurer of the church for many years. He had also been a member of the Marion Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club.
Bob worked as a bank cashier for 25 years and eventually worked his way up to Vice President. He was employed by Marion County Bank and later Bank One, from where he retired in 1988. After retirement he stayed busy appraising estates and traveling.
Bob and Phyliss traveled whenever they had a chance, making it to all 50 states. They spent over 20 winters enjoying their home at Saddlebag Lake Resort in Lake Wales, Florida, where Bob enjoyed playing shuffleboard and euchre.
In his spare time, Bob liked to add to his coin collection and take fishing trips to Canada. He enjoyed teaching Wii bowling classes while living at Parkside Village.
He will always be remembered for his generosity and friendliness, and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.
Bob is survived by his two children: David (Kelly) Hensel of Pickerington, Ellen (Chuck) Ficken of Westerville; and five grandchildren: Adam (Julianne) Hensel, Drew (Rachel Flora) Hensel, Alexandra Hensel, Brenna Ficken and Amy Ficken.
In addition to his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Hensel.
A memorial service honoring Bob’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2014, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion, with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. A private family burial will take place in Grove Cemetery at a later date.
Spending time with his family was one of the most important things to Bob. Because of that, his family asks rather than sending flowers, please take your family out for an evening or spend time with a loved one in his honor.
