Richard B. Indoe, age 86, of Marion, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014, at the Morning View Pointe Care Center surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
On June 22, 1928, Dick was born in Ashland, Ohio, the oldest of 3 children of the late Clifford and Geraldine (Bentz) Indoe. As a family, they moved to Marion when he was young to open Indoe’s Heating and Appliance Store on Church Street. He attended Marion Harding High School, but left early to help his family with their store.
Growing up, Dick was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Marion, and one summer the youth group took a trip to Lakeside Methodist Institute. The Lima Grace Methodist Church also sent a group, with a young lady, Sally Ann Fisher, joining them. Dick and Sally Ann quickly became friends, and knew they had something special between the two of them. Following the church conference, they continued their relationship by seeing each other every other Sunday after church and sending each other countless letters. After three years of their long distance relationship, they were united in marriage on July 31, 1949, at the Lima Grace Methodist Church parsonage. They cherished their 63 years of marriage, dancing every chance they could, and lovingly raising two daughters, Carol and Connie. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2013.
After working at his parent’s shop, Dick started in maintenance at L-K Enterprises, but worked his way up to being an electrical engineer with them. During their vast expansion, he often did their drawing and site specifications for them. He was a dedicated employee for Ludwig and Kibbey for 33 years.
In his own unique way, Dick was a bit of a genius, as he could find a way to solve most any problem. He even helped build his own home, doing all of the plumbing, heating, electric and on and on himself.
A man of faith, Dick was a lifelong member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, where he only missed attending church a few Sundays in his life, until he was no longer able attend due to his health. Over the years, he enjoyed singing in the choir, he donated their Caralon bell system to them, and he often would sneak in to church to fix something that only he knew needed fixed. He also was a member of the Y-Men’s Service Club, helping them bring in Christmas trees from Michigan every year. He was honored to receive their William McGee award.
With “music in their blood,” Dick and Sally Ann absolutely loved to dance, and he was a great lead. He also loved butter pecan ice cream and butterscotch candies, which he would leave the wrappers everywhere he went. He was very ornery.
The apples of his eyes were his grandchildren, whom he always tried to be there for. He was never “put out” by them, and always loved to help them in all their endeavors.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Connie (Robert) King of Marion; two grandchildren: Sara Williams and Ryan King; two great-grandchildren: Cameron and Cassidy Williams, all of Marion; a son-in-law, Dick Moore of Prospect; a brother, Tom (Jewell) Indoe; a sister, Nancy Jo Dasher, both of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his wife and parents, Dick was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Moore; and his brother-in-law, Gene Dasher.
A memorial service honoring Dick’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 6th, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 249 E. Church St., Marion. Burial will take place at a later date in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help with his family with expenses.
