Walter James Craig, 96, of Delaware

Walter James CraigWalter James Craig, 96 of Delaware, died early Friday morning, December 12, 2014 at the Kobacker House in Columbus.  He was born June 12, 1918 in Leetonia to the late Walter D. and Mary Patricia (Bates) Craig.

He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving during World War II.  At the age of 17 he owned his first grocery store in Columbus.  Two of his best known stores were Craig’s Market in the Short North and Craig’s Corner Market in Delaware at St. Rts 36-37 and Old State Road.  He had also worked in the aviation industry at Curtis-Wright in Columbus and in the shipyards in Jacksonville, Florida.  Walter loved taking care of his property and being a handyman, could fix about anything.

He is survived by daughter, Denise Thomas, Delaware, and special granddaughter, Christy (Scott) Thompson, Richwood who were his loving caregivers; daughter, Roseann (Robert) Stalter, Dublin; son, Rev. Jim (Mary) Craig, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his previous wives, Helen (Neff), Maxine (Hollar), Kathryn (Kelly), and eight brothers and sisters.

Private family graveside services will be held Monday at Oak Grove Cemetery with Rev. Patricia Stout, Chaplain for Ohio Health Hospice officiating.
