Marjorie Ellen (Smith) Hite, widow of Virgil Hite, died on Friday, February 6, 2015 at her home, surrounded by her loving family and over 90 birthday cards. She and her husband were married on June 27, 1954 and lived in northern Marion County the rest of their married life. Her husband preceded her in death on December 8, 2010.
She was born to the late Roy and Hazel (Barnhart) Smith on the family farm near Canal Winchester, OH, on February 5, 1932. She was the third of four children born in the farm house where her mother lived as a child and grew up there, and where her mother and father set up house-keeping at the time of their marriage. The house is still home to Marjorie’s nephew and family, which is the fourth generation of Barnhart lineage that has lived in the house with the fifth generation presently farming the land.
Marjorie attended and graduated from Canal Winchester School in 1950, the same school from which her mother graduated. In 1954, Marjorie graduated from The Ohio State University College of Home Economics with a Bachelor’s Degree. Her young married life was spent caring for her family, her home and helping on the farm. In 1970, she began teaching Home Economics in the Ridgedale School District, retiring from there in 1992.
Her love of fabric and sewing led her to work at Sew Nice, Upper Sandusky, for 15 years, retiring from there to be a full time homemaker. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Marion, and was very involved with the church’s Women of the Church organization, Sunday School, hand bell choir, youth groups and various committees. She was a 4-H advisor for 20 years.
Marjorie will be missed by her two children: Gary (Terri) Hite of northern Marion County, and Karen Anderson of Newark, DE; six grandchildren who were special to her: David (Emily) Hite of New Albany, OH, Crystal (Christopher) Burgess of Delaware, OH, Timothy (Christina) Hite of Marion, OH, Shawna Hite of LaRue, OH, Joshua Hite of Marion, OH, and Christopher Anderson of Newark, DE; great-grandchildren: Rieley, Taylor, Addyson, Rorynn, Blayke and Bishop Burgess and Abrianna and Alyssa Hite; she loved her grand and great grandchildren and gave them special attention. Other family members surviving include her sister Dorothy Nolan and Sister-in-law Betty Smith of Canal Winchester, OH, and several sister-in-laws and spouses and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil B. Hite; siblings: Gerald and Carl Smith; sister-in-law Ruth Ann Smith.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion, from 6PM to 8PM. Services honoring Marjorie’s life will also be held in the church on Saturday at 11:00 AM, the family will greet friends from 10AM until time of service with Pastor Mark Schuring officiating. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
Marjorie enjoyed flowers and had a green thumb, but she would prefer that memorial contributions be made to the Marion General Hospital Hospice or to the Emanuel Lutheran’s Quilting Fund or Hand Bell Choir.
Marjorie was extremely thankful for the family, friends and others who remembered her with prayers, cards, calls and concerns during her bouts with cancer.
The Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve Marjorie’s family and condolences may be expressed to the family www.SnyderFuneralHomes.com.
