Ellen M. Smith, 83, of Marion

Ellen M. SmithEllen M. Smith, age 83, of Marion, died unexpectedly Monday evening, March 9, 2015, at the Presidential Center Nursing Home following a brief illness.

On January 6, 1932, Ellen was born in Marion, Ohio, the only child of the late Nelson and Violet (Goff) Mitchell. She graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1950.

One day while skating at the Crystal Lake Roller Rink, Ellen kept having to help a young gentleman, Max Smith, off of the floor to “dust off the back of his pants.” From there, the rest is history. Shortly thereafter they were married on August 12, 1953, and they have cherished their 61 years of marriage. Together they lovingly raised four daughters.

A loving homemaker, Ellen took pride in caring for her husband and four daughters. She worked tirelessly to make sure they were always taken care of, and she especially loved spoiling them with her exceptional cooking.

A woman of faith, Ellen was formerly a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and more recently attended the Oakland United Methodist Church.

Appreciating beauty, Ellen loved to paint landscapes and scenery. She also loved the companionship of her dog, “Hershey Bar.”

Having a heart of gold, Ellen always put the needs of others before her own. She had a sweet charm and easy going personality.

She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, Max Smith; two daughters: Jacquelyn (Gary) Gosnell and Karen (Keith) Gosnell; all of Marion; a grandson, Kevin (Alice) Gosnell of Richwood; two great-grandchildren: Keaton and Deacon Gosnell; and several grand doggies.

Including her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by two daughters: Cynthia Smith in 1991, and Jennifer Smith in 2001.

Her family will greet friends from 4 – 6 p.m. on Friday, March 13th, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring her life will also be held there at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Pastors Craig Lewis and Rafael Velazco officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion Area Humane Society, 2264 Richland Rd., Marion, OH 43302.
