Hilda Rose Martin, 89, of Marion

Hilda Rose Martin, age 89, of Marion passed away on March 18, 2015, at home in Marion, Ohio,

Hilda Martin was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 5, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Hofer, sister of the late Joseph Hofer, also from Cleveland and wife of the late George W. Martin.

Hilda attended Ohio State University, where she met her future husband George W. Martin, 1999 Pioneer Inductee at the Ohio State University Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction, Martin was the only four-time rifle All-American for Ohio State. Hilda also worked as a stenographer with the Standard Oil Co. Cleveland.

Hilda and George married on December 29, 1951, in Cleveland, Ohio. During their 59 years of marriage, Hilda and George, while working for Remington, lived throughout the United States in many states where they enjoyed socializing with friends and entertaining many visits from family. From Waco, Texas; Memphis, TN; Syracuse, NY; Utica, NY; San Mateo, CA; Dallas, TX; and finally grounded in Denver, CO for over 30 years, Hilda nurtured nature, was an avid bowler, accomplished sewer, an animal lover, a Sheltie “Mom,” and was especially fond of her beloved Sheltie, Holly. Though distance separated Hilda and George from family, they always traveled many miles to return to Ohio at Christmas to enjoy their family, bringing her famous Nut Roll and Chex Mix.

After her husband’s death, March 15, 2010, Hilda came to live by her family in Marion, Ohio, where she enjoyed almost 5 more years of life, still making Chex Mix, Lemon Bars, and cookies for all of her nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Hilda is survived by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Kay Evans, of Columbiana, Ohio, and Howard and Doris Martin of Marion, Ohio. Hilda has many nieces and nephews and grandnephews and grandnieces.

Hilda would like to extend her love to all of her family who was always there whenever she needed something, no how far she lived from family.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Hilda Rose Martin will be celebrated at St. Mary Church in Marion, Ohio, 10AM Saturday, March 21, 2015 with Father Thomas Buffer presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, a division of Snyder Funeral Homes, are handling arrangements.
