Marie E. Davis Gillette, age 90, a lifelong resident of Marion, died peacefully late Monday evening, March 23, 2015, at Heartland of Marion following an extended illness.
On January 8, 1925, Marie was born in Marion, Ohio, the second of five children of the late Clyde and Effie (Stevens) Davis.
One night at a local dance, Marie was asked to dance by a young gentleman, George Gillette, and the rest was history. They were married on June 7, 1947, and they cherished their 45 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1992.
For over 20 years, Marie worked for Big Bear Stores in Marion, where she had been manager of the produce, and their Buckeye stamp and S & H stamp programs. She also worked at Quaker Oats.
Marie was formerly a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church.
Over the years, Marie and George enjoyed many camping trips together. Also, it just wouldn’t be right to talk about them without also mentioning their love for gambling. They loved trips to the casino and visited Las Vegas 37 times. Marie could sit at a slot machine all day if you’d let her. She also enjoyed reading, word searches and playing bingo.
Both a lovely and sometimes stubborn woman too, Marie will be remembered most for her deep love and concern for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her two children: Peggy Farlee and George “Steve” (Sherry) Gillette, both of Marion; four grandchildren: Greg (Renee) Farlee, Traci (Justun) Lott, Kerry (Dan) Wasserbeck, and Lindsey (Terry) Harris; eight great-grandchildren: Kendra and Addison Farlee, Morgan and Madi Lott, Payton and Avery Wasserbeck, and Cody and Jaidyn Harris; two sisters-in-law: Beverly Davis of Marion and Winona Davis of Bucyrus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Marie was preceded in death by four siblings: Charles and Dave Davis, Dorothy Fritz, and Bob Davis.
Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 27th, at the Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, 347 W. Center St., Marion. Services celebrating her life will also be held there at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, with Kevin Kehn officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Marion General Hospital Hospice or the American Cancer Society, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
