Herman Newsom, age 90 of Marion, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday morning April 21, 2015.
Herman was born in Pike County, Kentucky on August 7, 1924, the son of Henry and Fannie (Kinney) Newsom.
After Herman’s schooling, Herman went to work in the ship building yards in Newport News, Virginia. He then joined the “Greatest Generation” to proudly serve his county during WWII serving in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked as a coal miner until he moved to Marion where he worked at Tecumseh Products as an Inspector until he retired in 1983 after 30 years of service.
After meeting his childhood sweetheart, he knew they would be together the rest of their lives. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Herman and Myrtle were married on September 26, 1945, in Pikeville, Kentucky. Together they have shared sixty four wonderful years of marriage until she preceded him in death on January 7, 2010.
In his early years, Herman and his family enjoyed camping and fishing. In his 60’s and 70’s he became an avid bicycle rider and in his 80’s he took up riding a motor-scooter and did so until he was 89.
Herman will be dearly missed by his daughter and son-in-law: Patricia and Jerry Franklin of Marion; two granddaughters: Amy Franklin and Wendy Franklin; one great granddaughter: Haley Ann Whittington of Marion; two great grandsons: Damian and Dalton Malone; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Myrtle Newsom; and siblings: Herschel and Audrey Newsome.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday April 25, 2015 at the Marion Cemetery at 10:30AM, military honors will be by the Marion County Veterans Council.
Donations may be made to the Marion General Hospital Hospice or the Marion County Humane Society.
