Phyllis Marie Malo, age 79, of Marion, died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at her home.
Phyllis was born in Marion, Ohio on April 13, 1935 to the late Philip C. “Coonie” and Clara (McGill) Malo.
Phyllis graduated from St. Mary School in 1953 and from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1957, where she earned a bachelor degree in History.
Phyllis loved to travel and lived in Tunisia for four years, where she worked for the U.S. government. After learning French abroad, Phyllis taught French initially at Worthington High School and in later years at Elgin High School. Later in life, she also worked for the family business, Malo Brothers & Sons.
Phyllis was a longtime member of St. Mary Church in Marion, where she was an organist. She also played organ at St. Joseph in La Rue, Ohio. She was active in many organizations in the Marion Community, volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, The Marion County Historical Society, Well Baby Clinic, and Altrusa. She especially enjoyed monthly luncheons with fellow St. Mary classmates in Marion and annual reunions in Florida.
Phyllis is survived by sister, Patricia Durkin of Marion; two nieces, Elizabeth Durkin of Seattle, and Kathleen Clieves of Australia; nephew, Sean Durkin of Morral; two great-nephews, Nicholas Durkin and Hans Clieves; and great-great nephew, Garrison Durkin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at St. Mary Church with Father Thomas Buffer presiding with calling one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
