George W. Lupica, age 87, of Marion, and formerly of Mount Gilead, died Thursday evening, May 7, 2015, at Marion General Hospital following a sudden illness.
On March 26, 1928, George was born at home on Senate Street in Marion, the fourth of eight children of the late Catilena (Germana) and Joseph Lupica Sr. He started in St. Mary’s Catholic Schools in Marion and graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1946.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, George served from 1950 to 1952 as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict.
While in the Army, George met and quickly fell for a young lady, Dolores Peck, who also was serving in the U.S. Army. Three months later they were married on March 31, 1952. She was truly the love of his life and they shared fifty one loving years of marriage. She preceded him in death on September 13, 2003.
Upon his honorable discharge, George returned home and quickly found he had a passion for selling automobiles. For over 20 years, he sold for Danner Buick with his brother, Joe. Then in 1975, George and Dolores moved to Mount Gilead, to purchase and operate C & D Chevrolet and Oldsmobile for over 30 years.
Dedicated to the community, George was a member of the board for the American Red Cross , both the Marion and Mount Gilead Chapters, and the Morrow County Hospital. He also was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church in Marion.
An avid golfer, George golfed every chance he could, often at the Marion Country Club, where he was a member and had served on their board. He was proud to have hit 5 holes-in-one during his golfing career. He also loved to read anything he could get his hands on.
Snowbirds, George and Dolores enjoyed spending their winters in Scottsdale, Arizona, for over 35 years, thanks to the help of their son, Rick, who would run C & D during their time away.
Having never met a stranger, George could start up a conversation with anyone along any walk of life, and would try and sell them a car while he was at it. He was also fun loving, ornery, and had a great sense of humor. Living an interesting life, George had many stories to tell.
He will be missed by his two daughters: Terri (Dan) Tobin of Marion, and Kathy (Richard) Goff of Marysville, Washington; two grandchildren: Anthony “A.J.” Lupica and Angela (Ryan) Weber; a great-granddaughter, Paisley Weber; three sisters: Ann Dicken and Grace Kilbury, both of Arizona, and Mary Jo Cummins of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, George was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Lupica in 1981; son, Rick Lupica in 2008; brother, Joseph Lupica Jr.; and three sisters: Catherine Hurr, Ginny Bassler and Connie Vacca.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 12th, at the St. Mary Church, 251 N. Main St., Marion, with Father Thomas Buffer presiding. His family will greet friends for an hour prior to his service at the church. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 16810, Columbus, OH 43216-6810, in memory of his daughter, Lori Lupica.
