Frances Louise Lessig (Scranton), age 98, of Marion, died Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 2015, at the Presidential Center in Marion following complications brought on by a fractured hip.
On March 19, 1917, Frances was born in Marion, Ohio to the late Clyde and Rose Bell (Baker) Scranton. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School, and worked in the Marion County Treasurers Office for over 31 years prior to her retirement in 1978. Frances married Cecil W. Lessig, on November 11, 1940. Together they shared 44 years of marriage prior to his death in 1984.
Frances enjoyed playing bingo and cards, and watching football, basketball, and golf. She also loved taking trips to casinos, especially those in Las Vegas.
She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Rita Ayers of Ormond Beach, FL; three grandchildren: Richard (Laura) Field, Christine (Jerry) Leibold, and Susan (Don) Hall; 10 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Claudine Robertson of Galion; and several nieces and nephews.
The matriarch of the family, Frances was the rock that held everyone together. She was the one everyone could turn to for anything. Her family was the center of her life. She was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Frances was preceded in death by four sisters: Rita, Ruth, Christina, and Mary Scranton; a daughter, Judy Gunn of Marion; and two sons-in-law: Pete Gunn of Marion and Chuck Ayers.
Father Thomas Buffer will be celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Church in Marion on Thursday, July 2 at 11 am. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
