Grace E. Caldwell, age 91, of Marion, went to be with the Lord and was reunited with her husband, Earle, Wednesday morning, July 8, 2015, at Marion Manor following an extended illness.
On July 26, 1923, Grace was born in McKinleyville, West Virginia, the older of two daughters of the late James and Mary (Buck) McClure. She graduated from Wellsburg High School.
Grace married the love of her life, Earle Caldwell, on May 24, 1939. Wanting to be closer to their son, Grace and Earle moved from North Canton to Marion in 2005. They shared over 71 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on January 7, 2011.
As a lifelong homemaker, Grace’s first priority was taking care of her husband and family. She considered it her life’s purpose and greatest joy.
A woman of faith, Grace was a member of the Prospect St. United Methodist Church. Formerly, she was an active member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canton, where she participated in their Naomi Circle. She also was a member and past matron of William H. Hoover #580 Order of Eastern Star, where she participated with their Star Dusters club. She was also a member of the Legacy Chapter 596 Order of Eastern Star, and was past president of district #13 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the McKinley Shrine-White Shrine of Jerusalem, and the Kate DeWees Past Matrons and Patrons Association. She was a member and past president of the Canton Unit of Central Women United. She also was a president and board member of the Canton district of Lutheran Church Women.
Having a heart of gold, Grace was always giving to others. One of her favorite pastimes was making booties and hats for babies born prematurely and it is estimated she made well over 1000 of each. She also loved reading, loved her dogs, and going to Perkins to eat.
With a deep appreciation for history, Grace and Earle enjoyed traveling all over the world to see historical landmarks. They were proud to take several dream trips to the Holy Land and Europe, and they loved visiting Williamsburg and Washington D.C.
Most important of all to Grace was her family. She cherished every moment spent with them, and especially with her great-grandchildren.
Always on the go, to keep up with Grace you needed to “put on your tennis shoes.” She was a very strong, independent and loving woman.
She will be dearly missed by her son, James (Judy) Caldwell; granddaughter, Jennifer (Jeff) Hart; two great grandchildren: Colin and Tierza Hart, all of Marion; a sister, Jane White of Follansbee, WV; a nephew, Joe (Carla) White; and several great nieces and nephews.
Services honoring Grace’s life and homegoing will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11th, at Marion Cemetery (Harding Memorial side), with Pastors Therese Lehman and Joe Miller officiating.
