It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of George F. Cerny Jr., who lost his fight with cancer on December 19th, at his home. George was born in Gordon, Nebraska on January 7th, 1938 however; he spent the majority of his life in Marion.
George is survived by his wife Shirley (Fleming) of 57 years, son Jeffrey (Paula) Cerny, daughter Debra (Greg) Winger, son Michael (Vickie) Cerny, daughter Beth (Carlos) Cerny-Patino, grandchildren Kelly, Jennifer, Ryan, Tyler, Christopher, Drake, Carly, Olivia, and Max and great-grandchildren Kamden, Ronan, and Paul , brothers Arley, Arnold and John Cerny, sisters Eileen (Ron) Stillions and Marsha McElice. His parents preceded him in death.
George and Shirley met at the Hi-Way Roller Rink and he decided that he was going to marry her at first sight. They married on August 8th, 1958 – the luckiest day of his life.
George had a love for cars and worked as a manager of McDaniel Motors Auto Body Shop for over 40 years. He loved his Cadillac’s! He enjoyed skiing and led the Marion Ski group to Vail and Beaver Creek, CO, for 35 consecutive years. He was an avid snowmobiler and traveled to Canada, UP and Michigan regularly with family and friends. He also loved woodworking, gardening, genealogy, going to flea markets with Shirley and traveling to Nebraska and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In his golden years, George spent hours hanging out with his friends at the Meijer coffee shop and religiously watching Jeopardy.
George possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Inquisitive and eager to learn, he spent hours researching family history, hobbies, reading and even memorizing the Bible. George was determined, opinionated and outspoken with a mind of his own, but above all, he was a loyal and generous friend, husband, father and grandfather. George was ONE OF A KIND!
George will always be remembered as a family man and a good husband. His biggest achievement in life was providing for his four children and he was very proud of them, as well as his grandchildren. He always had a soft spot for his grand-kids.
A special thanks to Dr. Keith Blair (best friend and Physician) and Dr. Farrukh Awan of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
