Myron H. “Sass” Cornwell, age 89, of Marion, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, July 7, 2016, at his home in the Kingston Residence.
On April 27, 1927, Myron was born in London, Ohio, one of eight children of the late Ernest and Beth (Evans) Cornwell.
Growing up together in York Center, Ohio, Myron met the love of his life, Betty Lou Bault, when he was young. Right before joining the U.S. Army, they were married on June 16, 1945. Together they shared sixty two wonderful years of marriage, and they lovingly raised five children. She preceded him in death on July 21, 2007.
On June 23, 1945, Myron entered the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II. He served stateside and was trained to operate tanks.
Upon his honorable discharge, Myron and Betty Lou moved to the Marion area for work. For thirty five years, Myron worked as a millwright, at Pollock Steel, which would become Armco Steel. While there he earned the nickname of “Sass”, because he carried himself with an attitude everyone had to respect at work. He retired in 1980.
Myron was an active member of the American Legion Post 162, where he was honored to be a part of their 40’s/8’s club.
Over the years, Myron and Betty Lou enjoyed many travels together, with one of their favorite trips being a train ride across the United States until they made it to their destination out west.
An avid sports fan, Myron loved watching several sports, including golf, basketball and football.
By far Myron’s best trait was his personality! He had fun most every day of his life, and treated everyone he spent time with like they were family. Myron was especially proud of his family, and loved to brag about his many grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his five children: Brenda (Larry) Peters, Thomas (Connie) Cornwell, Marcia (Robert) Stapleton, Marla (Ron) Sunkle, and Jacqueline (Bruce) Clewell; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Including his wife and parents, Myron was preceded in death by all seven of his siblings: Glenn Thompson, Jack, Delmar, Thomas and Leroy Cornwell, Thelma Cole, and Marybell Smith.
His family will greet friends from Noon – 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at the Gunder/Hall & Snyder Funeral Home, 347 W. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will follow at 2 p.m., with his grandson, Heath Stapleton officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in York Center Cemetery in York Center, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio Health Hospice, March of Dimes, and the Richland Rd Church of Christ, and they may be sent to the funeral home.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone at the Kingston Residence for making him feel at home and cared for for the past year and a half, and to Ohio Health Hospice for their recent tender care in the past few months.
