Vernon Charles “Vern” Trimmer, age 84, of Cardington, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family following a battle with his health that started 17 years ago.
On May 15, 1934, Vernon was born in Marion, Ohio, one of three children of the late Vernon Clare and Lillian V. (Fout) Trimmer. He was raised on the family farm, where he began milking cows and raising pigeons at the age of five. He graduated from LaRue High School in the class of 1952. He furthered his education at the Ohio State University.
Shortly following graduation, Vernon was pretty persistent with a young lady he had fallen for, Mary Ann Whitney. Eventually, Mary Ann gave in to his charm and from there the rest is history. They were married on June 12, 1954, and have been by each other’s side for the past sixty four years.
Vernon shared a special bond with his father-in-law, Harold Whitney, whom he learned the masonry trade from with his brother, Seymour Whitney. After five years, he went out on his own, running his own masonry business for fifteen plus years. He then built twenty plus homes with mainly his own two hands, and some help from Mary Ann.
In addition to masonry, Vernon shared a love of hunting with his father-in-law, Harold, taking many trips to Michigan together to hunt. He shared this love with his grandsons, always keeping a keen eye on the woods behind their home to let them know when the deer were nearby. He also loved raising and racing pigeons, competing in pigeon clubs in Galion, Marion and Columbus. He won numerous trophies for the feats of his pigeons, many of which were 500 mile races. This became a family affair, because whoever was home would be responsible for clocking the pigeons in when they returned home.
A farm boy at heart, Vernon kept a dairy cow at home throughout his life to always be able to enjoy fresh milk. He also enjoyed helping his daughters raise cattle and hogs for them to show at the Morrow County and OSU fairs. Vernon even raced his own pacer horses in the Morrow County and Delaware County fairs.
A good hearted man, Vernon “thought of others more than he thought of himself.” Mary Ann would often come home to finding larger appliances missing, because Vern thought others needed them more than they did. He also had a way with words, writing heartfelt poetry and songs for many of life’s occasions.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Mary Ann Trimmer of Cardington; daughter, Patricia (Bruce) Nash of Cardington; three grandsons: Joshua (Lauren) Nash, Lucas Nash, and Charles (Megan) Nash; six great-grandchildren: Kylie and Ryder Nash, Colton Nash, and Sophia, Lillian and Eleanor Nash; a sister, Patricia Baker of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Cheadle; and sister, Virginia Robinson.
His family will greet friends from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring his life will follow there at 4 p.m. with Hospice Chaplain Jeff Slider officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Glendale Cemetery in Cardington.
