Needing a win in the worst way, Columbus snapped a seven game losing streak as they came out on top in a 11-8 slugfest against Toledo at Huntington Park.
The Clippers started this game with a bang offensively when Lonnie Chisenhall crushed a three run shot over the scoreboard in right center field and onto Nationwide Boulevard. Chisenhall struck again in the second with an RBI single to right field.
Columbus would later load the bases in the second. That led Cord Phelps to break the game wide open with a bases clearing triple down the right field line. Phelps did not have to stand on third for long as he came home to score on a Jeremy Hermida RBI single to left. In total, the Clippers tallied five runs in the second.
The Clippers had a comfortable 8-0 advantage heading into the top of the fifth. Toledo, however, made it a more interesting game with a big inning. Kevin Russo got the Hens on the board with a two run double down the left field line. After Russo scored on wild pitch by Scott Barnes, the Hens loaded the bases with two outs. Danny Dorn then clubbed a grand slam into the Wendy’s Hamburger balcony, making it an 8-7 affair.
The Clippers got some of those runs back with a two run single by Cord Phelps in the bottom half of the fifth and a Tim Fedroff solo blast in the sixth. Toledo’s Nick Castellanos also went deep with solo shot of his own in the top of the seventh.
Fortunately, Columbus held on for the win in the end. Scott Barnes (W, 3-2) was awarded the win for Columbus. Shawn Hill (L, 0-7) remained winless on the season for Toledo. Preston Guilmet (S, 15) shut the door in the ninth for the Clippers.
Columbus will wrap up their six game home stand on Wednesday afternoon. The Clippers will have right-hander Joe Martinez (1-4, 6.61) get the start on the bump. Toledo will counter with righty Derek Hankins (1-3, 3.48). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM.
