For the sixth straight game, Columbus was on the losing side of the scoreboard as Indianapolis powered their way to a 13-3 win over the Clippers at Huntington Park.
Indianapolis got off to fast start offensively when Chase d’Arnaud hit a lead-off homer over the left field wall to give the Indians an early 1-0 lead. Columbus came right back in the bottom of the first with a two run shot off the bat of Cord Phelps.
The one run lead would not last long for the Clippers as Indy put together a big second inning. Tony Sanchez drove home a run with an RBI double off the right field wall. The very next batter, Jerry Sands, tomahawked a two run homer that one hopped the concourse near the left field bleachers before bouncing out of Huntington Park. Josh Harrison later added an RBI groundout, capping a four run frame for the Indians.
Tony Sanchez later added a solo shot that landed in the left field bleachers in the top of the sixth. Jeremy Hermida brought the Clippers closer with a solo homer that just had enough to get over the right field wall in the bottom of the sixth.
Unfortunately for the Clippers, Jered Goedert kept the power display going for the Indians with a two run shot in the seventh. Indianapolis closed offensively with a bang in the ninth with Ivan De Jesus going deep with a solo blast, Matt Hague driving in a run with an RBI triple, and Brett Carroll crushing a three run homer off the batter’s eye in centerfield.
Zack Thornton (W, 1-0) got the win for Indianapolis. T.J. House (L, 1-4) was hit with the loss for the Clippers.
Columbus will try to avoid the four game sweep at the hands of Indy on Monday night as they bring down the curtain on their four game set at Huntington Park. Columbus will go with right-hander Trevor Bauer (2-2, 5.05) on the mound. Indianaplois will counter with lefty Andy Oliver (3-2, 3.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
