A frustrating homestand came to bitter end for Columbus as Toledo defeated the Clippers 9-4 at Huntington Park.
Toledo got on the board first with a RBI groundout by catcher Brad Davis in the top of the second. Kevin Russo also added a solo blast into the left field bleachers. The Hens then augmented their lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI sacrifice fly by Davis and an RBI single by Russo.
The Clippers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a Chun Chen RBI single. Chen later came around to score on an RBI single by Matt Lawson. Lawson, after stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by Toledo catcher Davis, also came into score on a Lou Marson RBI single to right.
Following that productive inning for the Clippers, the Mud Hens took control of this game with a two run fifth and a three run sixth. Nick Castellanos sent a two run bomb into the Scott’s Lawn seats in the fifth. RBI singles by Argenis Diaz and Brandon Douglas and an RBI sacrifice fly by Jordan Lennerton made up the scoring in the sixth.
Other than the third and a run in ninth on a bases loaded walk to Nate Spears, Columbus was offensively quiet the rest of the game as Toledo earned another victory in 2013. Derek Hankins (W, 2-3) took home the win for the Hens. Joe Martinez (L, 1-5) was hit with the loss for the Clippers.
The Clippers embark on a ten game road trip by heading north to Toledo for two games at Fifth Third Field. Columbus righty Carlos Carrasco (2-0, 3.21) will start on the mound. The Mud Hens will send southpaw Casey Crosby (2-5, 4.44) to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
