The Ohio State women’s basketball team posted an 89-78 upset win over No. 17/19 Purdue Thursday night at Value City Arena to begin Big Ten play. The win marked the first Big Ten victory for McGuff as the Buckeyes improved to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
“Every night, you’re going to play a well-prepared team and it’s going to be a challenge,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “It’s a great league for women’s basketball and hopefully we continue to be better, so we meet these challenges head on. I thought our defense was good, but more importantly, we took turnovers and turned them into points.”
Offensively, the Buckeyes had five players post double-digit points led by Martina Ellerbe and Ameryst Alston with 19 points each followed by Cait Craft with 15 points and Darryce Moore with 14 points, respectively. Ashley Adams also helped out off the bench with 10 points vs. the Boilermakers.
“If you’re going to beat a terrific team like Purdue, you’re going to have to make shots and we did,” said McGuff.
The Scarlet and Gray also controlled the boards throughout the entire contest, outrebounding the Boilermakers, 38-29, while collecting a 25-16 lead in points off turnovers. Moore had eight rebounds, while Ellerbe had seven and Adams notched six.
