Ohio State handed No. 22 Indiana its first loss of the season with an impressive 70-51 win at Assembly Hall Saturday afternoon.
The win, which was Ohio State’s second over a ranked opponent this month, improves Ohio State to 2-1 in the Big Ten and 12-7 overall while Indiana falls to 1-1 and 14-1 overall.
Sophomore Ameryst Alston tied a career-high with 29 points and junior Raven Ferguson set a career best with 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting. Senior Martina Ellerbe also notched her first career double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
“Ameryst was great tonight,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “She was in attack mode for 40 minutes. She’s a very special player and we’re a different team when she’s playing with that type of aggressiveness.
“This was Raven’s best game all year. She was really good. She’s been playing aggressive of late, but not always making great decisions and finishing. But she was terrific today. She generated a lot of offense for herself and her teammates.”
The Buckeyes led from the outset and built a 19-point lead midway through the second half. But Indiana mounted an 11-0 run to cut Ohio State’s lead to 56-48 with 8:23 to play as the Hoosiers seemed poised for a comeback. But a 30-second timeout by Coach McGuff stopped the bleeding and Ohio State regrouped and went on to outscore Indiana, 14-3, the rest of the way with eight points coming from Alston.
