The Ohio State women’s basketball team dug itself an early hole and never recovered in a 64-49 loss to Michigan Sunday in front of 6,350 fans at Value City Arena.
The loss drops the Buckeyes to 11-7 and 1-1 in the Big Ten while the Wolverines move to 1-0 in conference play and 10-4 overall.
Neither team shot the ball exceptionally well as the Buckeyes shot 31 percent and the Wolverines just 36. The difference in the game came on the boards and at the free throw line. Michigan outrebounded the Buckeyes, 48-33, and made 26 of 28 free throws to 3 of 11 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes also had plenty of open looks from behind the arc, but could not get them to fall on this night, hitting 6 of 25 from three for the game.
The Buckeyes hit just three of its first 15 shots. Despite shooting 18 percent in the first half, sophomore guard Ameryst Alston kept the Buckeyes in the game with seven first-half points as OSU trailed Michigan 25-13 at the half. The Buckeyes were held scoreless the final 7:03 as the Wolverines built their lead.
The Buckeyes shot 43 percent in the second 20 minutes, but weren’t able to get the stops on the defensive end to mount a comeback.
Alston would lead the Buckeyes with 15 points while Martina Ellerbe finished with 10. UM’s Siera Thompson led the Wolverines with 18 points.
Ohio State will face the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, January 11 in Bloomington, Ind. at 4:30 p.m.
