The Columbus Clippers got their first win of 2014 Tuesday night dropping the Louisville Bats 6-5. Travis Barnwart was the winning pitcher for the Clippers going six innings and allowing only one run on two hits. The losing pitcher was David Holmberg who went five innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Mark Lowe got the five-out save for the Clippers. The win improved the Clippers to 1-4 on the season and the loss dropped the Bats to 2-2.
The hero of the night was Jesus Aguilar who blasted two homers for the Clippers. He hit a two-run bomb in the fourth following a David Cooper leadoff single. The home run was just the second of the season for the Clippers, both slugged by Aguilar. He was not done adding his third of the season, second of the night, a three-run shot in the seventh. Aguilar finished 2-4 on the day with two homers and five runs driven in. On the season Aguilar has three homers, seven RBI and on OPS of 1.882 five games in.
Aguilar was not the only slugging bat in the game. The Bats added three homers on the night, bringing the game total to five. Ruben Gotay for the Bats hit a solo shot in the sixth making it 2-1 at the time. In the eighth shortstop Kristopher Negron made it 6-3 on a solo homer off of Clippers’ reliever Nick Hagadone. Gotay hit a two-run home run later in the eighth making it 6-4, also off of Hagadone.
The fans were treated to five home runs on the night and the Clippers’ first win of the season. After Monday’s game was rained out, the make-up game for the Clippers and Bats is still to be announced. The two-game series concludes Wednesday at 11:35 a.m. with lefty T.J. House as the probable starter for the Clippers and lefty Jeff Francis for the Bats.
