The Columbus Clippers (22-21) lost 5-0 to the Syracuse Chiefs (22-22) Monday night. After consecutive solid offensive games the bats went quiet for the Clippers as they had to rely on a spot start with no true starters available. With Josh Tomlin, T.J. House and Trevor Bauer at the major league level and Danny Salazar not ready for a turn in the rotation it was up to the bullpen to eat up the nine innings. A total of five pitchers went for the Clippers.
Scott Barnes (2-2, 4.41 ERA) got the spot start for the Clippers and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in two and one-third innings with two walks and one strikeout as he took the loss.
Ross Ohlendorf (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was solid in a rehab assignment from the Washington Nationals. He went five innings of one-hit ball with a walk and four strikeouts in his second start in the minors and got the win. Taylor Hill got the unconventional twelve-out save, his first save of the year
The Chiefs got what they would need early. Emmanuel Burris walked and scored on a double by Steven Souza, Jr. Souza then scored on an RBI single by Jhonatan Solano to make it 2-0 Chiefs.
After an unearned run scored in the third it was 3-0 until Brandon Laird bombed his second homer of the season to lead off the sixth and make it 4-0 Syracuse. They scored another in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Solano and Laird.
It was a struggle offensively for Columbus. Coming off of consecutive eight-run games for the first time in 2014 the bats went quiet as they failed to score. Columbus hit into four doubleplays on the night.
The loss for the Clippers clinched the road trip as a losing one. Despite it being the first loss in three of four games at Syracuse the Clippers were swept at Rochester to begin the trip.
The final game of the series is a noon start Tuesday at Syracuse.
