Clippers Beat Red Wings 5-3

The Columbus Clippers (15-15) beat the Rochester Red Wings (16-14) 5-3 Tuesday night. The Clippers rallied for a three spot in the seventh to take the lead which they would take to the end in Columbus.

With Josh Tomlin called up by the Cleveland Indians it was Kyle Davies (1-0, 2.57 ERA) up from double-A Akron who pitched and he delivered a quality start for Columbus. Davies went seven innings and gave up two runs, both in the second, on three hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts in his win. Matt Guerrier (0-1, 7.20 ERA) took the loss pitching an inning in relief. He allowed the three-run eighth on three hits and one walk. Vinnie Pestano recorded his second save of the season for Columbus.

Davies struggled at first allowing a walk, double and two-run single in the second inning. After the single made it 2-0 Rochester, Davies settled in retiring 16 of the next 17 he would face with the lone runner being on a single.

Down two runs Columbus cut the lead in half when Tim Fedroff scored on a hard hit error off the bat of Jesus Aguilar in the third. It remained 2-1 until the sixth. With two outs Matt Carson drew a walk and was sent to third on a Roberto Perez single. Audy Ciriaco tied the game with a double to left scoring Carson.

The Clippers got the go-ahead run and some insurance in the seventh. David Cooper led off the frame with a single and was standing on second after a wild pitch and a pair of flyouts. With two down Giovanny Urshela came up with a clutch RBI double to give Columbus the lead. For the second consecutive night the winning run came off the bat of Matt Carson as he scored Urshela and himself on a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right field.

Carson got two extra base hits in consecutive nights doubling his season total from four to eight with a homer and double in each game. A single in the first extended Fedroff’s on-base streak to 21 which tied him for the longest for the Clippers in 2014 with Jose Ramirez, who reached in each of his first 21 games. A win Wednesday could have Columbus above .500 in the win column for the first time in 2014.

Wednesday will feature Travis Banwart (1-0, 4.18 ERA) for Columbus against Trevor May (1-2, 4.44 ERA) for Rochester. Game three of the series is a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
