The Columbus Clippers (16-15) got a game above even for the first time in 2014. They beat the Rochester Red Wings (16-15) 7-0 Wednesday night. Columbus stays hot winning seven of its last ten and three in a row.
Travis Banwart (2-0, 3.44 ERA) was fantastic for the Clippers in a quality start. Banwart went six innings allowing just three hits with a season-high eight strikeouts. Trevor May (1-3, 4.97 ERA) took the loss lasting four and two-thirds innings with five runs allowed, four earned, on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
For the third straight day Columbus scored the winning run on a multi-run homer. This time it was in the second inning. After a lead-off single by Giovanny Urshela and Matt Carson reached on an error by third baseman Deibinson Romero, Roberto “RoboCop” Perez unloaded the bases. A three-run bomb to left, Perez’s fifth of the season, made it 3-0 Columbus.
The Clippers added a pair in the fifth on a ground-rule double by Urshela with the bases loaded making it 5-0 at the time.
Perez’s homer brings him within one of his career high which he had with the Lake County Captains in Single-A in 2010. Tim Fedroff hit a single in the second inning extending his on-base streak to a season high for Columbus at 22. He passed Jose Ramirez who reached safely in the first 21 games straight.
The final game of the four-game set is Thursday at 6:35 p.m. at Huntington Park as the Clippers go for their first sweep of 2014. Trevor Bauer (3-0, 1.10 ERA) will be back on the mound for Columbus against Scott Diamond (2-3, 8.10 ERA) for Rochester.
