Red Wings Beat Clippers 5-4

The Columbus Clippers (20-19) lost to the Rochester Red Wings (19-20) 5-4 Thursday afternoon. The Clippers couldn’t muster any offense early the first six innings and got their first hit on a single in the seventh, rallied for four runs in the eighth, but failed to tie the game. The loss is the third in a row for the Clippers.

Tyler Cloyd (1-2, 6.38 ERA) did not have his best stuff and took the loss. He allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings with two strikeouts. His opposite Alex Meyer (1-1, 3.79 ERA) was spectacular in the win. He only made it through five, but it was five innings of no-hit ball with four walks and seven strikeouts.

The Clippers fell behind early when Cloyd gave up five straight hits in the first. Three singles loaded the bases and Deibinson Romero hit a grand slam to make it 4-0. The homer was the eighth allowed by Cloyd in 2012, most in the International League.

The first hit for Columbus wouldn’t come until the seventh for Columbus. With two outs in the inning Carlos Moncrief reached on an infield single to get the Clippers on the board with a hit.

Columbus would get on the board with runs in a big with in the eighth. After Tim Fedroff led off the frame with the Clippers’ first clean hit the International League Batter of the Week Matt Carson hit a two-run bomb to left, his fourth homer of the year.

David Cooper made it three straight hits and a one-out single by George Kottaras got two runners on Ryan Rohlinger reached on a fielder’s choice at third and throwing error on the third baseman, Romero. With runners on second and third and two away Moncrief got his second hit and made it a one-run game with a two-run single to left.

After Carson reached on a one-out walk in the ninth Cooper was rung up on a check swing by the home plate umpire A. J. Johnson Clippers manager Chris Tremie went from the third base coaching box to argue the call. Tremie was ejected by Johnson after arguing the call. The Clippers would strand Carson at first.

The final game of the four-game set and season series between Rochester and Columbus is scheduled for a 7:05 first pitch Friday night at Frontier Field in Rochester.
