Indians Sweep Clippers in Doubleheader

The Columbus Clippers (49-46) were swept by the Indianapolis Indians (53-42) in a doubleheader Thursday. It was 1-0 Indy in game one pitcher’s duel and 14-2 in a game two blowout loss. Pitching dominated game one as Danny Salazar and Nick Kingham were in an old fashion standoff and 12 runs in two innings did the job for Indy in game two.

The losses put the Clippers on a five game losing streak.

Salazar (3-6, 4.50 ERA) dominated early, but the walks hurt him. He went six innings and allowed one run on two hits with nine strikeouts, but six walks. Kingham (3-1, 1.62 ERA) retired the first 17 batters he faced before his perfect game was broken up with two outs in the sixth. He went six innings and allowed no runs on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Andy Oliver pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

After the Clippers intentionally walked the bases loaded in the sixth the Indians scored on a bases-loaded walk by Mel Rojas to take a 1-0 lead, a score they won by in game one.

At the end of game one Giovanny Urshela was helped back to the dugout with an injury after grounding out in the seventh, but he played game two of the twinbill at third.

John Holdzkom (2-0, 0.00 ERA) took the win game two on a bullpen game. He allowed one hit in three innings of work out of the pen. Josh Outman (0-1, 7.11 ERA) took the loss. He went two innings and allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.

In game two the offense came much earlier. Columbus got a lead-off single by Tyler Holt to start the game. After he stole second Holt was thrown out at the plate on a Jesus Aguilar single. Giovanny Urshela singled with two outs and Matt Carson scored “El Jefe” and Urshela on a double.

The Indians got one back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.

Indianapolis rallied in the third. After loading the bases with no outs a two-run single by Robert Andino gave Indy a 3-2 lead. The Indians scored a pair more on a couple of RBI singles by Brett Morel and Chris McGuiness. A sacrifice fly by Mel Rojas made it 6-2.

The Indians loaded the bases four times and scored five in the third inning.

Carlos Moncrief threw out a man at the plate in the third. It was his International League best 16th of the season.

The Indians then scored one in the fifth and seven in the sixth before an out was recorded.

Gabriel Arias (2-2, 4.91 ERA) will take the ball for game three of the six-game series Friday at 7:15 p.m. Arias will be faced by Adam Wilk (7-7, 4.19 ERA) for Indy at Victory Field.
