The Columbus Clippers (46-40) fell to the Toledo Mud Hens (42-45) 7-2 at Toledo. The Mud Hens had three innings in which they scored two runs Wednesday night. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Columbus.
Kyle Davies (4-6, 3.92 ERA) struggled against the Mud Hens. He allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in 4 innings with three strikeouts. Robbie Ray (5-3, 2.74 ERA) got the win in a quality start. He went 6 innings and allowed one run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.\
The Mud Hens scored first in their first chance. International League All-Star Ezequiel Carrera led off the frame with a walk and scored on a Hernan Perez triple. The recently crowned IL home run king and IL All-Star Mike Hessman added to the Toledo lead with an infield single to score Perez.
Hessman hit career home run number 259 Monday to pass Ollie Carnegie for the most in IL history.
Columbus’ All-Star Jesus Aguilar factored into the scoring in the third. “El Jefe” hit a ball in the gap that allowed Tyler Holt to wheel around to score and cut the Toledo lead to one.
Davies’ walks came back to hurt him in the fourth. With two outs he walked Manny Pina and Wade Gaylor. Jordan Lennerton drove them both in with a double and made it a 4-1 Toledo lead.
Toledo extended the lead in the sixth. Trevor Crowe hit a lead-off homer and Jordan Lennerton crushed a solo shot with two outs and made it a five-run game.
Despite the lopsided final score the Clippers did get good offense from Carlos Moncrief. He went 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Moncrief leads the team with 17 doubles.
In addition to Aguilar Columbus catcher Roberto “RoboCop” Perez was selected to the IL All-Star roster. Both finished second at their positions and named to the team as reserves.
Columbus finishes the series at the Mud Hens Thursday with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Tyler Cloyd (6-4, 4.47 ERA) looks to help the Clippers bounce back against Derek Hankins (3-9, 6.45 ERA) and Toledo.
