Pawtucket Beat Clippers 5-3

The Columbus Clippers (49-43) fell to the Pawtucket Red Sox (48-46) for the second consecutive long night at Huntington Park 5-3 in the 10th Tuesday night. Andres Torres and Travis Shaw hit back-to-back homers to down the Clippers in extras.

Bryan Price (0-1, 5.06 ERA) took the loss allowing the 10th inning rally. Drake Britton (2-3, 5.50 ERA) picked up the win after pitching a perfect ninth for Pawtucket. Miguel Celestino finished out the 10th for his first save of the season.

Neither starter factored into the decision, though each man was quality. Tyler Cloyd (6-5, 4.26 ERA) went six and one-third innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Allen Webster (4-4, 2.84 ERA) allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

The Clippers struck first in the first thanks to the Pawtucket infield. Jose Ramirez hit an infield single. Throwing errors by Webster and second baseman Jonathan Herrera backing up the first error behind first allowed Ramirez to reach third. After Tim Fedroff walked Ramirez scored on a doubleplay hit into by Jesus Aguilar.

The wait for Justin Sellers was over in the second inning. Sellers went deep over the left field wall for his first homer in 2014. The rest of the Clippers gave “Sell Block” the “silent treatment” as Sellers returned to the dugout.

The PawSox tied the Clippers in the sixth. After a one-out walk by Travis Shaw an RBI double by the rehabbing Will Middlebrooks got Pawtucket on the board. Alex Hassan tied the game with an RBI single.

The homers by Torres and Shaw came after Jonathan Herrera hit a one-out single. The two run bomb off the scoreboard in right by Torres was his third and Shaw’s solo shot to left was his seventh.

Carlos Moncrief also homered in the 10th, a two-out solo shot. The homer was his ninth and he finished a triple shy of the cycle.

The Clippers fell to 2-6 in extra-inning games with the loss.

Columbus looks to split the series Wednesday against Pawtucket. Toru Murata (0-0, 5.31 ERA) is scheduled to start for Columbus against Steven Wright (3-1, 2.40 ERA) and the PawSox. First pitch of the final game of the series is 7:05 p.m.
