D-Backs down Reds 4-3

Chris Owings delivered his first career walk-off hit with an RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the D-backs to a 4-3 win over the Reds on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The D-backs also captured the series win, taking two of three games.

“I went up there all day and felt like I had a good approach, hit some balls hard,” Owings said. “It kind of lined up there right at the end and that’s how it works out. I got a good pitch to hit.”

Paul Goldschmidt led off the 10th with a walk, his fourth time on base, and David Peralta followed with a single, his fifth hit. After a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Saltalamacchia and an intentional walk to Jake Lamb, Owings blasted the game-winning knock to straightaway center off of Reds reliever Ryan Mattheus.

Both starting pitchers turned in quality outings. D-backs starter Patrick Corbin and Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani each allowed three runs over six innings and did not factor in the decision.

There was some confusion after the walk-off, as the Reds noticed that Peralta hadn’t touched third base and Jake Lamb hadn’t touched second base. Reds manager Bryan Price brought the entire matter to the attention of the umpires, but according to the Official Baseball Rules book, the game was over when Goldschmidt touched home and Owings touched first.
