Todd Frazier’s leadoff home run snapped a 10th-inning tie Tuesday night and lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-8 triumph over the San Francisco Giants, whose four-game winning streak dissolved.
Frazier’s big hit ended a sequence of manic swings in momentum. Cincinnati appeared to take control with a five-run seventh inning, tallying all of its runs in that frame with two outs. Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips contributed RBI singles, Ivan De Jesus Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk and pinch-hitter Ramon Cabrera lined a two-run single to account for the scoring.
“I was more emotional because I made that throwing error [in the ninth] that was costly. Whenever you pick yourself up, I think you’re going to be more emotional,” Frazier said. “To get a big hit like that was very exciting.”
The Giants trailed, 8-5, when ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner provided the evening’s highlight with an eighth-inning pinch-hit appearance against Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. Bumgarner drew a walk after falling behind on the count, helping the Giants score a run. That seemed to energize San Francisco, which forced extra innings by scoring twice in the ninth.
