When Michael Doughterly recently purchased his house on Congress Street in Marion he found he had more than just a new home. After the purchase, he discovered two tombstones in his new backyard. Looking for help on what to do, Doughterly contacted Susan Matthews, President of the Marion Genealogy Society and member of the Friends of Marion Cemeteries and OGS Cemetery Committees.

State Announces War Era Story Project
Ohio Department of Aging Director Bonnie Kantor-Burman and Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Thomas N. Moe today announced the launch of the departments' joint War Era Story Project. The agencies are seeking stories by the people who lived them – from veterans of World War II, to the men, women and children who held steady on the home front.
Harding Home Event Steps into the Past
Civil War enthusiasts are in for a treat as “Voices of the Union’s War“ is presented at 7 p.m. June 7 under the tent on the grounds of the Harding Home. Three distinct voices from the 1861-64 conflict will converge as photographer Mathew Brady, President Abraham Lincoln and a soldier with the Ohio Colored Troops reveal their thoughts and experiences.

The War of 1812 – The Role of the Area Now Known as Marion County, Ohio features a review of key events of the war from national, state and local perspectives.
Genealogy Society Presents First Family Awards
The Marion Area Genealogy Society (MAGS) held its 26th Annual Banquet on Saturday, April 7, 2012. First Family of Marion County awards were presented to Mary Reinhart, Stuart Koblentz, Martin Shelton, Rachel Shelton, and Michael McLaughlin. Their ancestors’ surnames included Fickle, Free, Gregory, Harvey, Spangler, Tipton, Uncapher, and Williams.
4-H Creator Among 2012 Great Ohioans
The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board and the Capitol Square Foundation recently announced the 2012 Great Ohioans. The 2012 honorees were presented by the Capitol Square Foundation and unanimously approved by the full membership of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board earlier today. The six honorees were selected from nominations submitted by individuals and organizations throughout Ohio.
Time Capsules Found in Marion Courthouse
When construction began to renovate the Marion County Courthouse, workers began looking for the time capsule that was placed there. The problem…the capsule wasn’t where the records said. Then, while searching around, they found a capsule they weren’t expecting to find.
The capsule they were looking for was finally found on Monday. It’s smaller than a shoe box, but full of items places there in 1884.
