OCC Names New Director

Bruce J. Weston has been selected to serve as the next Ohio Consumers' Counsel (OCC), only the fourth in the agency's 35-year history, the OCC Governing Board announced today. He has been serving as the Interim Consumers’ Counsel at OCC since October 2011.

Antitrust Complaint Against Two Ohio Rock Salt Producers

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said Wednesday that he has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Cargill, Inc. and Morton Salt, Inc. alleging actions that resulted in above-market prices being paid by the Ohio Department of Transportation and other government entities around the State, including Marion, for rock salt, used to make wintry roads safer for travelers.

Bridges Out of Poverty Training Offered in Marion

Marion Matters will host a day-long Bridges Out of Poverty training on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 8:30am to 4:00pm. The group is inviting anyone interested in helping to reduce poverty in Marion to attend. Jodi Pfarr, a national facilitator, will lead the training and will ask attendees to ponder the question, “Has poverty become an acceptable lifestyle in Marion?”

Public Meeting Set to Discuss Marion Skate Park

The Marion Parks Department will hold a public meeting to discuss ideas for the design and features for the new skate park to be constructed at Lincoln Park. The meeting will be held at the Recreation Center, 240 West Church Street, on Wednesday, March 28, at 4:30pm.

Ohio Tornado Outbreak Starts Severe Weather Season Early

March 25-31 is Ohio's Severe Weather Awareness Week, proclaimed by Governor John R. Kasich and promoted by the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, to encourage residents to prepare for weather incidents that typically occur during spring and summer months, but they may strike at any time.

State Says City Must Issue Large Tax Refund

The State of Ohio has informed the City of Marion that they must make a large income tax refund to an unnamed utility company. Deputy Auditor Cathy Chaffin Tuesday evening told the Finance Committee of Marion City Council that the City has been told to refund $298,422.

Chaffin, who also serves as the City’s Tax Commissioner, told committee members that the refund represents an overpayment in 2009.

Group Donates $4,446 to Marion General Hospital Hospice

TWIG IV/Marion Board of Realtors recently presented a check in the amount of $4,446 to Marion General Hospital Hospice. The check represents donations received during the annual Hospice Remembrance Tree event, located at Marion General Hospital, Marion Area Health Center, and Marion Centre, as well as the Texas Hold’em project.

The Marion Police Department is seeking Jeffery Fitzpatrick. He is a 58-year-old white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He stands 6-feet tall and weighs 205 lbs. His last known address was 166 Plymouth Street.

Ohio American Water customers in the area will have the opportunity to testify at a public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, at 6:00pm, regarding the utility’s request to increase rates by over 20 percent.

Local Girl Scouts Teaming Up With Goodwill for a Good Turn

Area Girl Scouts are expected to take part in Good Turn Day 2012, on Saturday, March 24, from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Local scouts will collect donations and volunteer at eight Goodwill sites in Marion, Delaware, and Union counties.
