High School Jazz Bands To Take Palace Stage

The Smithsonian Museum launched Jazz Appreciation Month in 2001 as an annual event that pays tribute to jazz both as a historic and living American art form. It has since grown to include celebrations in all 50 states and 40 countries.

The Marion Palace Theatre has plans to join the celebration with “And All That Jazz,” a concert featuring performances from several area high school jazz/swing bands including Pleasant, Mt. Gilead, Colonel Crawford, River Valley, and Harding’s Stardusters.

Bill Hopes E-Books Will Save Students Money

Saying it could save more than 50 percent on the cost of textbooks, some House Democrats want to give Ohio college students the chance to trade in their piles of expensive books for laptops or other electronic readers.

Under the bill, which the Columbus Dispatch is reporting, the regents would have two years to require publishers to electronic versions of textbooks. Publishers also would be required to provide textbook formats for students with disabilities.

Textbook costs have increased an average of 6 percent per year from 1986 to 2006 and have risen 10 percent a year since.

Columbia Gas Is Offering Bill Assistance

Bill-paying assistance remains available from Columbia Gas of Ohio for households earning between 175 and 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines, according to the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC).

The funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis to help Columbia Gas customers who have traditionally not had access to other state assistance programs. The OCC, Columbia Gas and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio reached an agreement to distribute refunds from an interstate pipeline supplier to assist low-income customers.

Police Make Arrests After Shots Fired

Two men are under arrest in connection with an investigation into a report of shots being fired on Elgin Court Tuesday morning.

Police were called just after 6 AM after a woman leaving 464 Elgin Court reported having her rear window being shot out.

She had a 2-year-old and a baby under the age of one in the back seat at the time.

No one was injured, but police have arrested LenDale Franklin, 27, of the address for felony domestic violence and Rashawn Thomas, 21, for felony obstruction of justice.

Both men have been transported to the Multi-County Correctional Facility.

16 Fire Departments Battle Egg Farm Blaze

A fire at an egg farm blazed throughout the night just north of Marion County. An Ohio Fresh Egg Farm warehouse caught fire just before 11:00pm last night and continued to burn Wednesday morning.
