Ohio Veterans Can Apply for Cash Bonus Program

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce and Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Bill Hartnett Tuesday launched the Ohio Veterans Bonus program in Columbus.

An estimated 200,000 Ohio residents are eligible for the Ohio Veterans Bonus.

City Council Holding Two Special Meetings

Marion City Council will hold two special meetings to pass three appropriation issues. The ordinances received their first reading at the regular Council meeting on Monday. At that time there were not enough votes to bypass the required three readings.

In order to approve the appropriations more quickly, Council will hold two special meetings, and thereby hold the required three readings, this week.

State Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus

Ohio's first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2010 was confirmed today by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), which also reported a sharp increase in the number of WNV-positive mosquitoes.

The patient, a 74-year-old male from Putnam County, is currently recovering. Meanwhile, the number of WNV-positive mosquito pools in the State of Ohio increased from 4 to 98, in the past month.

Saxbe, Former U.S. and Ohio AG, Dies

William Saxbe, a Republican maverick who became the fourth attorney general to serve under President Richard M. Nixon and presided during the Watergate investigation, died Tuesday. He was 94.

Saxbe, who served in the Ohio Legislature and as state attorney general, died at his home in Mechanicsburg, northwest of Columbus, said his son, Charles "Rocky" Saxbe.

Marion City Schools Getting Piece of Education Grant

The State of Ohio found out Tuesday they are finalists in the “Race to the Top” federal grant. Not only is the State celebrating, so are the Marion City Schools, Rushmore Academy, and Treca Digital Academy. All three are on the list of schools that will receive funding from the $400 million the State has been awarded.

Blood Donors Needed for Monday Drive

The American Red Cross will conduct an open blood drive at the Marion Area Health Center, 1050 Delaware Avenue, on Monday, August 30th. Collection hours run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Donors from outside the facility should enter through Door #7 at the rear of the complex. The drive will be held in conference rooms A, B & C on the building’s lower level.

Ohio to Receive “Race to the Top” Grant

Nine states and the District of Columbia will get money to reform schools in the second round of the $4.35 billion "Race to the Top" grant competition, The U.S. Education Department said Tuesday.

Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C., will receive grants, department spokesman Justin Hamilton said. The amounts for each state were expected to be announced later.

Marion County Unemployment Unchanged

The unemployment rate for Marion County was unchanged in July from June. The rate stands at 11.2 percent. The amount is slightly less than a year ago as the July 2009 rate was 11.4 percent.

The figures released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services estimates there are about 3,500 people unemployed in Marion County.

ODOT – Nearly 9,500 Jobs in July Thanks to Stimulus

New monthly figures collected by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) reveal a record number of Ohio construction workers – nearly 9,500 across the state – had jobs on stimulus-funded transportation projects in July.
