State Parks Boat Dock Lottery Deadline is August 31

Boat owners wishing to rent public boat docks at several popular Ohio State Park lakes have until Tuesday, August 31 to enter lottery drawings used to select renters for available docks.

Parole Board Denied Clemency to Bucyrus Man Set for Execution

The Ohio Parole Board unanimously rejected clemency Thursday for a man who says he's innocent of the 1994 triple slaying he's scheduled to die for next month. The board said no evidence was presented in the case of Kevin Keith that would alter the outcome of the trial.

Local Club Hosting Hunter Education Classes

A two-day hunter education class is being offered by the Meeker Sportsman Club on August 28th and 29th. Completion of a hunter education course is required for all first-time hunting license buyers in Ohio.

Lawsuit Against Clerk of Courts Settled

A lawsuit filed by former employees of the Marion County Clerk of Courts against the Clerk, Julie Kagel, and the Marion County Commissioners has been settled. The payments were approved by the Commissioners at their Thursday meeting.

The lawsuit, which was currently pending in federal court, was filed after the employees were fired. Theresa Azaroff, Lori Maynard, Hollis McGeorge, and Kimberly Phillips alleged they were fired because they supported Kagel’s opponent for re-election.

Popcorn Festival Holding Annual Pooch Pageant

The deadline for entering the Marion Popcorn Festival’s 3rd Annual Poppin Pooch Pageant is Friday, August 27.

Canine contestants will compete in three categories: Swimsuit/Team Spirit, Stupid Pet Tricks, and Formalwear/Dress for Success. Bonus points will be awarded for creative use of popcorn and/or use of the 2010 Popcorn Festival theme, “Peace, Love and Popcorn”.

Credit Card Changes Begin to Take Effect

The Federal Reserve’s final new rule involved in the implementation of credit card changes takes effect August 22 and will protect consumers from unfair penalty and inactivity fees, said Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray.

Over 150 Local Kids Benefit from School Supply Collection

Dan DeVille, First Energy Representative, dropping off items collected by the employees at FirstEnergy.As a strategy in their Education initiative, the United Way of Marion County and its partner agency Heart of Ohio Mentoring recently collected more than 2,000 back-to-school supplies through its second annual “Stuff the Bus” community campaign. The supplies were passed on to the NAACP and Marion Rec Center for distribution to more than 150 local children.

Discount Tickets Available for Popcorn Festival Rides

The Marion Popcorn Festival is working with two area businesses to offer deeply discounted tickets for the Marion Popcorn Festival amusement rides. Those tickets will be available at all Marion locations of McDonalds and the Marion Community Credit Union through Tuesday, September 7th.
