The Marion Police Department says the owner of Pop’s Carry Out turned the tables on a would-be armed robber and wrestled him out the door of his store early Wednesday morning. While things worked out this time, police warned that this is a dangerous action to take.

Area Collaboration Wins National Achievement Award
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has announced that Collabor8, an innovative partnership between seven northeast Ohio county departments of job and family services, has won an achievement award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). Collabor8 allows Ohioans in any of the seven counties — Delaware, Hancock, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Sandusky and Wood — to call one toll-free number to apply for cash, food and medical assistance.
Ohio Expands Education Benefits for Veterans’ Families
Under a new Ohio law, the spouse or dependents of deceased veterans who move to Ohio receive immediate in-state tuition rates as opposed to waiting 12 months to establish residency.
Currently, under the Ohio G.I. Promise, veterans with one year of honorable service, their spouse and dependents that move to Ohio are immediately considered in-state residents for the purposes of tuition, state educational subsidies and financial aid. Active duty, guard, reserve servicemembers, and their families are also eligible for this educational benefit.
Electronics Recycling Event to Benefit Ridgedale Girls Basketball
Ridgedale Girls Basketball Team, in conjunction with Acme Electronics Recycling of Galion, Ohio, will be hosting an electronics recycling drive on Saturday, July 21st, 2012. The community can donate their old, unused and obsolete electronics to be properly recycled. The proceeds will go to the Ridgedale girls Basketball Team to help fund their trip to Florida to play in the KSA Holiday Tournament.
Marion Church is Offering Free School Supplies
Peace Community United Church of Christ will distribute backpacks and school supplies to area families that could use some assistance with back to school items. They invited those in need to stop by Heritage Elementary School, 720 Columbus-Sandsuky Road North, on Saturday, July 21, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.
Marion Family YMCA has Preschool Openings
The Marion Family YMCA announces openings for their licensed preschool program, and is now accepting registration for the fall of 2012. Openings exist in both part time classrooms: two and a half and three year olds’ class times are Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 – 11:00 am; and four and five year olds’ class times are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:15 am – Noon. Both classes start for the school year in September.
Poppin’ Pooch Pageant Nears
The Marion Popcorn Festival’s Poppin’ Pooch Pageant will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 21, at the Yancey Clinic of Veterinary Medicine located at 1097 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion. Dogs will compete in four categories: Sportswear, Western Wear, Popcorn Wear, and Perform a Trick (2 minutes).
State Names 667 Internet Cafes with 7 in Marion County
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Thursday announced that his office received 667 affidavits from owners of internet cafes. The affidavits were required as part of Am. Sub. H.B. 386 which put a moratorium on any new electronic sweepstakes parlors or internet cafés. The listed cafes include 7 in Marion County and 10 in Crawford County.
Red Cross Disaster Response Winds Down – Urges Planning for Future
As power has been restored across the state and residents have returned home, American Red Cross disaster response activities are winding down. All Red Cross emergency shelters and cooling centers have been closed and feeding routes have been suspended. At the same time the current effort wraps up, the Red Cross is urging residents to plan for future natural disasters.
