5k to Raise Funds for Mission Trips

Community Christian Fellowship is hosting a Memorial Mission 5K Run/Walk in at Prospect Park in Prospect on Saturday, May 26. Registration is at 7:00am and the race will begin at 8:00am.

Registration is $20 for adults and teens and $5 for kids 12 and under.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Saturday

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, Campbell Soup Company will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to help Stamp Out Hunger across America. Now in its 20th year, the annual food drive has grown from a regional to a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

Annual Marion Red Cross Radiothon is Thursday

The American Red Cross Radiothon – a 12-hour fundraiser on WMRN/WYNT radio – will be held on Thursday, May 10th. This annual event, a major source of funding for the local chapter, is being broadcast live from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on WMRN AM 1490 and WYNT Majic 95.9 FM.

State Patrol Focusing on Motorcycle Safety, Enforcement

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the Patrol would like to remind motorists that there will be an increase in motorcycles on the roadways with the warmer weather and to remind motorcyclists to ride trained and to ride sober. The rise in the number of motorcycles on the road is also being fueled by a 7 percent increase in registrations over the past few years.

Lawmakers, Governor at Odds Over Third Grade Reading Rule

Again at odds with fellow Republicans, Gov. John Kasich blasted Senate leaders yesterday for altering his third-grade reading guarantee, arguing the changes “weaken efforts to improve education for Ohio’s children.”

Ohio Election Law Changes Head to Governor

On one side: Republicans, repealing an elections-law overhaul they crafted last year and still defend as good legislation.

On the other side: Democrats, fighting the repeal even though they dislike the law so much that they and their allies worked to get it on the November ballot where it could be overturned.

Officials Urge Caution Before Re-Hiring Police Officers

While one Marion City Council member pushed Monday to re-hire two police officers, the mayor and other council members urged a wait-and-see strategy before spending any potential increase in tax revenues. No other member of Council or the administration supported re-hiring the officers, or anyone else, at this time.

Larger Rabbit, Poultry Barn to Greet Fairgoers

A barn on the Marion County Fairgrounds is growing and, for the first time in years, will house all of the rabbit and poultry entries for this year’s fair. The Senior Fair Board, who is leading the project, says construction started last week and volunteers are continuing to raise funds.
