Ohio State University is using a written survey to match up freshman roommates in the final year before the process is computerized.
The school will move to an online system that will determine whether students are likely to get along based on factors including neatness, sleeping habits and whether they smoke. A Facebook page also is being developed where students can look for the right roomie on their own.
The new web-based method may be tested with a small number of students for the coming school year before its official launch in 2011.
For now, Ohio State is relying on written answers to questions on a housing form to assign roommates. Students are asked about their feelings on issues such as smoking, overnight guests and drinking.
