Harding Students compete in Envirothon

Students from Northwest Ohio met recently at the Northwest Ohio Area 1 Envirothon at the 4-H Camp Palmer in Fulton County. There were a total of 62 teams from Northwest Ohio that competed. Both Harding High School teams that participated placed in the top fifteen.

The Envirothon is a multi-disciplinary, environmental problem-solving program culminating in a series of annual competitions. Teams of five high school students (grades 9-12) train and compete in the areas of soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues at regional, state and national levels.

Michelle Mattix, Marion Soil and Water District Administrator, stated the Envirothon is designed to take youthful curiosity one step farther, it’s all about getting involved and getting educated.

"It is our hope as resource professionals to push the minds of young people to realize the interrelationship of all living things, and to look toward the future of resource management," said Mattix. "It’s a great opportunity for high school students to meet professionals from a variety of federal, state, and local natural resource conservation agencies."

Mattix said students benefit from exposure to various approaches to environmental questions. They will also have an opportunity to learn more about environmental career opportunities and responsibilities.

The Area 1 Envirothon is one of five Area Envirothons to be held throughout the state. From here, winners proceed to the State Envirothon where they are given the opportunity to advance to the Canon National Envirothon.
