Alley Vacation Requested for Proposed Restaurant

Marion City Council’s Streets and Sewers Committee Tuesday evening gave initial approval to a request to vacate a north/south alley between 436, 442 North Main Street and 443 North State Street. The vacation was requested by the property owner, BEC Realty.

Vacating an alley means that it is no longer a public roadway and it becomes part of the private property surrounding it.

The Marion City Planning Commission approved the request unanimously at an earlier meeting. The plan is that the property will be developed into a Taco Bell location. With the recent rezoning of the property touching North State Street, the company wanted to vacate the alley to make for smoother access.

There are utilities that run through the alley that will remain in place.

The full City Council will discuss the request at upcoming meetings and hold a public hearing on June 24, 2013 and no final decision will be made before that hearing.

During the Finance Committee meeting also held Tuesday, members approved various fund transfers for several departments. They included payments for liability insurance. The 3-year deal requires some upfront payments, but will save the City of Marion about $68,000.
