Proposal to Increase County Sales Tax to Appear on November Ballot

The Marion County Commissioners Tuesday morning voted 2-1 to place a 0.25 percent sales tax increase proposal on the November ballot for voters to decide. During more than an hour of discussion, there were voices for and against the increase, of which the lion’s share would go to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Multi-County Correctional Center.

State of Ohio Sued Over Early Voting Changes

President Barack Obama's re-election team has asked a federal judge to reopen a target-rich window for all Ohioans to vote in person on the three days before Election Day.

In a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday, the Obama campaign, along with the Democratic National Committee and Ohio Democratic Party, argued that restrictions on balloting those days violate the U.S. Constitution's equal protection clause.

Council Starts Exploring Income Tax Increase Proposal

Marion City Council Tuesday evening started exploring a proposal to ask voters to increase the City’s income tax. The proposal calls for an increase of .25 percent, making the total rate 2 percent, which would be earmarked for specific departments, including police and fire. It would be the first income tax increase since 1988.

Marion Elections Board is Seeking New Deputy Director

Following the resignation of Sarah Baughman, the Marion County Board of Elections is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Director. Qualified candidates must be affiliated with the Democratic Party reside within Marion County or be able to relocate within 30 days of accepting the position.

Governor Signs Legislation to Strengthen Campaign Finance Laws

State Representatives Jeff McClain (R-Upper Sandusky), who represents Marion, and Brian Hill (R-Zanesville) Tuesday attended Governor Kasich’s bill signing of House Bill 326, which imposes a criminal penalty on public officials who knowingly use public funds for political purposes.
